In yet another extreme display of aggressive rhetoric toward Greece, retired colonel Çağlar Özer launched unprecedented threats and references that bring back to the forefront the climate of tension in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean.
With statements that cause intense concern, Çağlar Özer attempted to link historical events of World War II with current Greek-Turkish relations, adopting a particularly aggressive and warlike rhetoric.
Referring to the German invasion of Greece during World War II, he claimed that Nazi forces captured the country overnight, while making special reference to the airborne landing in Crete, arguing that the Greeks were taken by surprise.
At the same time, he claimed that during the period of the Great Famine, Turkey sent food aid from Edremit to Lesbos, presenting this move as proof of Turkey's stance toward the Greek people.
However, the most worrying point of his statements was the direct military threats against Greece.
"I warn once again.
If the situation leads to a conflict, the Turkish military commanders will be drinking their coffee in Athens 24 hours later" he characteristically stated, in a phrase that is expected to provoke strong reactions.
Established Turkish positions
Çağlar Özer also brought back established Turkish positions regarding maritime zones, directly challenging the sovereign rights of Greece.
He argued that Greece did not invoke its position regarding the Exclusive Economic Zone of the islands during negotiations with Italy in the Ionian, while also referring to Kastellorizo (Meis), challenging its role in the delimitation of the continental shelf and maritime zones.
At the same time, he launched new warnings regarding the presence of Greek military forces on the Aegean islands, arguing that "there should be no military activity on the islands" and warning that the consequences will be "very heavy" if this situation continues.
Israel was also targeted by his statements, with the retired Turkish officer arguing that it is attempting to use Greece as a "proxy" and a "crutch" in the region, claiming that Athens is falling into this "trap."
Despite the particularly aggressive tone of his statements, Çağlar Özer concluded by claiming that "Turkey has no intention or goal of invading Greece," a reference that stands in stark contrast to his previous direct threats regarding the military capture of Athens within 24 hours.
These specific positions fall within the broader context of the harsh nationalist rhetoric occasionally recorded in Turkey, fueling the already tense climate in Greek-Turkish relations and raising new questions about the level of tension in the region.
