A case causing revulsion even by wartime standards is shaking Ukraine, centering on the commander of the 155th Independent Mechanized Brigade, Lieutenant Colonel Stanislav Luchanov, who was arrested on heavy charges, while investigations are now expanding into other dark cases connected to his unit. The case began when Ukrainian authorities proceeded with the exhumation of the bodies of two brothers, Maksym and Roman Moseichuk, from the Kyiv region. The investigation revealed a horrific scene: the two men were kidnapped from their home, transported hundreds of kilometers away to a military training ground in the Poltava region, where they were brutally tortured, executed, and subsequently buried. Ten people were arrested in connection with the case, including Stanislav Luchanov, who, according to authorities, attempted to flee by deserting his unit.
The incredible motive – It all started with motorcycle noise
According to the indictment, the order for the operation was personally given by Stanislav Luchanov. The motive, according to information, was almost unbelievable. The commander's wife, who was temporarily staying with her mother in a village within the Kyiv region in June 2026, was annoyed by the noise of motorcycles driven by the village youth. When she reprimanded them, the young men reacted strongly. She complained to her husband. Luchanov went to speak with them, but also faced strong reactions. According to investigators, that is when he decided to "punish" everyone he deemed responsible.
Secret operation – The arrests and the cover-up attempt
Officers of the Military Law Enforcement Service (VSP) and the National Police arrested eight servicemen allegedly involved in the operation, as well as battalion commander Oleksii Dovholenko. All were remanded in custody for 60 days. Particular sensation was caused by the fact that the judicial process was attempted to be conducted away from the public spotlight. During his defense, Oleksii Dovholenko avoided directly naming who gave the order, although all evidence in the case file, according to information, points to Stanislav Luchanov.
The commander disappeared – Arrested in Kyiv inside his lawyer's car
Following the first arrests, Stanislav Luchanov abandoned his unit and was declared a deserter. The Operational Command "North" issued a search warrant. He was eventually tracked down and arrested in Kyiv, while riding in his lawyer's car.
Luchanov's powerful backing and the dark past of Skala
According to information from military circles, Stanislav Luchanov is considered a figure with powerful connections within Ukraine's top military leadership. He is a full recipient of the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky and has also been honored with the Order for Courage. Before taking over command of the 155th Brigade in February 2026, he was the chief of staff of the notorious 425th Assault Regiment Skala. This specific regiment had repeatedly been targeted by reports regarding the extreme methods of discipline applied to its personnel. Videos had leaked online showing brutal beatings of soldiers by officers in front of lined-up units, while information had occasionally circulated about mysterious deaths inside the regiment. Despite successive incidents, Luchanov never faced consequences, which is attributed to his high military honors and his relations with top officers. Even the alleged leader of the team that carried out the operation, Oleksii Dovholenko, is decorated with the Silver Cross.
Investigation into organized murders
The Prosecutor General's Office is investigating the case for unlawful deprivation of liberty and premeditated murder of two individuals allegedly committed by an organized group. All servicemen allegedly involved in the kidnapping and murder have been suspended from duty, while an extensive audit is underway in the 155th Brigade by mixed teams from the State Bureau of Investigations (DBR) and the VSP. However, the case appears to be much larger. According to Strana sources within the DBR, investigators are now also examining a series of unexplained disappearances of servicemen from the 155th Brigade who had been classified as missing in action. According to the same information, it is not ruled out that certain soldiers deemed "undesirable" were executed on orders from command and their deaths recorded as combat casualties.
"They will pin everything on the perpetrators"
Heavy concern prevails in the region that the case will ultimately be limited to the conviction of only those who directly participated in the operation. Residents express fears that Stanislav Luchanov will remain temporarily remanded in custody until the public outcry caused by the scandal dies down, and then the case will lead to a gradual downgrade, without holding those who allegedly gave the orders accountable.
