The former prime minister of Poland denounces the decision of Zelensky
Ukraine will face the consequences of the decision of Volodymyr Zelenskyy to create a national "pantheon of heroes", which includes the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, stated the former prime means of Poland, Mateusz Morawiecki, who served as head of the Polish government from 2017 to 2023.
"Ukraine will pay the price first"
"Zelensky not only did not take a single step toward dialogue, but decided to go even further. He announced the creation of a national pantheon and stated that 'no one will tell Ukraine which heroes it should honor'.
But it will not be Poland that will suffer the consequences of such a historical policy.
Ukraine will be the first to pay the price," Morawiecki wrote in a post on Facebook.
"The cult of the UPA weakens Ukraine"
The former Polish prime minister argued that "the cult of the UPA" does not strengthen Ukraine, but instead weakens its prestige, complicates its relations with its allies, and distances it from the path of integration into the West.
The decision that caused reactions in Poland
On May 26, Zelensky gave the Separate Northern Special Operations Center of the Special Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces the name "Heroes of the UPA".
The decision caused intense reactions in Poland, where the UPA is associated with the massacres of thousands of Polish civilians in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia during World War II.
Note: The text above renders the statements of Mateusz Morawiecki.
The characterization of the UPA constitutes a subject of intense historical and political controversy.
In Ukraine, parts of the UPA are honored as an anti-Soviet resistance movement, while in Poland the organization is considered responsible for massacres of Polish civilians.
