In one of the most resounding interventions of recent months, the Russian president Vladimir Putin claimed that the Western countries are no longer hiding their intentions and are openly preparing for a potential conflict with Russia, using as a justification what he characterized as a nonexistent Russian threat.
Speaking at an event with graduates of military academies and higher educational institutions of the Russian security forces, the Russian leader accused the countries of NATO and the European Union of drastically increasing their military expenditures and proceeding with an unprecedented militarization of their economies.
"The West is now openly declaring that it is preparing for war against Russia," Putin mentioned, arguing that the Western governments are using the Russian threat as a tool to justify new armaments, higher defense budgets, and the transfer of more and more military resources to the eastern borders of the Alliance.
His statements come during a period in which several European countries are significantly increasing their defense expenditures, while NATO has set the further strengthening of its deterrent power against Russia as a strategic goal.
The nuclear triad in the foreground
The Russian president directly linked these developments to the need to strengthen the Russian armed forces, giving particular emphasis to the modernization of the country's nuclear deterrent force.
As he stated, the nuclear triad of Russia – the land, naval, and air nuclear forces – continues to be upgraded within the framework of the state armaments program. At the same time, he referred to the strengthening of the land forces, the aerospace forces, and the navy, arguing that the experience gained on the Ukrainian front has accelerated the development of new technologies and weapons systems.
According to him, more than 1,000 new types of weapons systems and military equipment were tested in real combat conditions during the past year. Among these are advanced unmanned aircraft, loitering munitions, electronic warfare systems, and robotic platforms used in various operational roles.
He also gave particular weight to the evolution of the military operation in Ukraine. Putin argued that the Russian forces continue to fulfill their mission, while he characterized the areas where operations are being conducted as "historically Russian lands."
"Our soldiers and officers are fighting with courage, protecting our people and liberating historical lands of Russia," he stated characteristically, repeating the well-known position of the Kremlin regarding the character of the military operation.
The statements of the Russian president reflect the climate of tension prevailing in the relations between Moscow and the West, during a period where defense expenditures are increasing on both sides and geopolitical balances are changing at a rapid pace.
At the time when Russia projects the image of a country that is strengthening its deterrent power and investing in new weapons systems, the Western governments insist that their own moves aim exclusively at strengthening collective defense and deterring potential threats.
The only certain thing is that the confrontation between Russia and the West is entering a new phase of increased strategic suspicion, with the statements of the leaders and the military moves acquiring ever greater weight on the international scene.
