An incident that references a science fiction scenario is at the center of an investigation by American intelligence agencies and the Pentagon.
An American F-15 pilot who was shot down over Iran testified that he witnessed a strange formation of interconnected Iranian drones in the sky, which were moving in perfect coordination like a single organism.
The testimony, as expected, caused an alarm, if not panic, in the American military.
And this is because if Tehran has reached this level, then it has acquired advanced capabilities for networked control of drone swarms, something that until today only major military powers have achieved.
If confirmed, it could signal a technological leap for Iran that makes it even more powerful against the USA and Israel.
The shocking description
A US fighter aircraft pilot, who was rescued by special forces after being shot down over Iran last April, described a shocking sight shortly before ejecting from his aircraft: multiple Iranian drones hovering in the air, moving as one body, in a formation that resembled a jellyfish, according to four sources familiar with the matter.
As reported by the American network CNN, the testimony, which had not been previously published, was conveyed by the F-15 pilot to intelligence officials during a briefing after the incident.
It immediately caused an intense dispute within the American intelligence community, which has not yet been resolved.
If the aviator indeed saw what he described, a formation moving in coordination, it would represent an alarming advance in the capabilities of Iranian drones.
"Multiple drones interconnected and moving as one, with smaller drones below the larger ones like legs," one of the sources familiar with the pilot's testimony told CNN.

"Truly alien"
Another source told CNN that the pilot described seeing a "minefield of drones" in the air.
Although the exact cause of the downing of the F-15 is still being investigated, initial reports indicated it was possible that the drone formation had somehow allowed Iran to shoot down the American fighter, according to two of the sources.
The F-15 had a crew of two people, a pilot and a weapons systems officer.
The American forces immediately launched search and rescue operations.

The downing of the F-15
The downing of the F-15 fighter constituted the first time an American aircraft was shot down over Iran.
The pilot was rescued a few hours after his ejection from the aircraft, while the weapons systems officer avoided capture by Iranian forces in the mountains for more than a day before also being rescued.
It is not clear if the weapons systems officer also saw the drone formation.
A second aircraft, an A-10, was shot down during the rescue operation, but its pilot managed to eject safely outside of Iranian airspace.

Disagreements
The officials of the American intelligence agencies disagreed as to how what the F-15 pilot described should be interpreted and whether he could recall the incident clearly.
First of all, he had suffered a concussion during the crash.
It was the second time he was shot down during the war with Iran: he was also among the pilots shot down in a friendly fire incident by forces of Kuwait early in the conflict, according to two of the sources.
"Are you certain?"
Had he indeed witnessed a mature technological capability that American intelligence agencies were unaware of?
A beta test?
Or a mirage in the desert?
The intelligence officials who conducted the briefing told him something along the lines of: "Are you certain you saw what you say you saw?", another one of the sources reported.
The American Air Force referred the questions to the US Central Command, which did not immediately respond to the questions of CNN.
The Office of the Director of National Intelligence did not respond to a request for comment.

Assistance from China, Russia
The questions regarding the drone program of Iran arise while the US and Tehran are negotiating an agreement that would end the war with Iran, having started a 60-day period of talks under a ceasefire last week.
The talks are expected to focus on the nuclear program of Iran, although both sides have raised a wide range of issues.
Although the specific capability of the drones described by the pilot was not something that American intelligence agencies had previously estimated that Iran possessed, there is a series of reports indicating that Iran was receiving help from China and Russia for the development of its drone technology, according to two sources familiar with the matter.
"Mesh networking"
The technical term for the capability described by the pilot is "one-to-many meshed networking," according to the sources.
Generally, mesh networking allows an operator to simultaneously control multiple drones.
It is believed that other countries, Russia and China, possess this capability.
Any development in the already sophisticated drone warfare program of Iran would be a cause for concern for the American forces and their allies in the region.
Mesh networking could also theoretically be used to provide an internet connection to remote areas without existing infrastructure, a US official noted, meaning, theoretically, for a harmless use.
Asymmetric weapon
Iran offensively used its strike drones as an asymmetric weapon during the multi-day conflict against American and Israeli forces, as well as neighboring Gulf countries.
"We will spend massive, massive amounts, a lot of blood and money, to protect ourselves from something that can be coordinated in this way," Emma Bates, an expert in drone warfare and defense modernization who founded the company Cachai, told CNN, referring to the threat created by mesh networking capabilities for drones.
"If it can coordinate itself into a recognizable shape and maintain that shape, and if it carries explosives, and if it retains backup resources to attack whatever the first wave of attack did not destroy, then this is an extremely capable approach," Emma Bates said.

The downing of the F-15
The downing of the American fighter F-15E Strike Eagle by Iranian forces occurred in April 2026.
The two-member crew ejected successfully and was rescued unharmed after a highly risky American operation.
The F-15E was hit by Iranian anti-aircraft systems, possibly a Chinese-made missile, over southwestern Iran.
The pilot of the aircraft was located and extracted by American special forces within a few hours of the crash.
The name of the pilot has not been officially revealed by the USAF or CENTCOM.
The pilot was flying an F-15E Strike Eagle with the call sign "DUDE 44", which was shot down over Iran on April 3, 2026.
For a second time
According to reports, the same pilot had already survived a previous downing about a month earlier, when one of three American F-15Es flying over Kuwait was accidentally shot down by friendly fire from Kuwaiti forces.
All crews had ejected and been rescued.
The commander is considered by some analysts as likely the first USAF fighter pilot since the Vietnam War to be shot down twice in the same conflict and survive both incidents.
The aircraft belonged to the 494th Fighter Squadron, which is based at RAF Lakenheath in the United Kingdom.

Impressive rescue operation
However, the weapons systems officer, WSO, was hiding for nearly two days in mountains and was finally located via satellite signal and rescued.
The operation set up by the US for the rescue of the American colonel was truly impressive.
The mobilization of the American forces was immediate and massive, as it was a battle against time so that he would not fall into the hands of the Iranians, who had placed a bounty on him for 60,000 dollars.
As reported, hundreds of personnel from the Special Forces participated, including the elite "Team 6" of the Navy SEALs, dozens of warplanes, helicopters, and intelligence services, while the CIA, in order to gain time, implemented a deception operation by spreading false information that the pilot had already been found, disorienting the Iranian forces that were searching for him.
During the night, American attack helicopters and aircraft launched heavy bombardments to keep away the Iranian troops that were approaching the spot where the pilot was located, while it is pointed out that the operation faced great difficulties, as two American transport aircraft carrying commandos were hit or grounded, complicating the situation.
"We have him"
Despite the fierce clashes, the American commandos managed to locate and extract the injured officer.
The success of the mission was sealed with the official message of the American president Donald Trump: "We have him!".
"WE HAVE HIM! My fellow Americans, in the last few hours, the United States Military conducted one of the most daring search and rescue operations in US history, for one of our incredible crew members, who happens to be a highly respected Colonel, and for whom I am thrilled to announce to you that he is SAFE and SECURE! -" Trump mentioned in his post.
