Sensational retreat: Trembling over Article 4 activation in NATO, awe at the Russian response - Speechless over the drone in Romania
Thriller with the activation of Article 4, NATO backed down at the last moment.

Reflexes of defeat, if not crushing, were displayed by NATO following the crash of a drone, for which the Russian army is blamed, in Romania as it hid behind Bucharest and thus refused to activate Article 4 of the Alliance, as reported by Politico. "Romania requested additional air defense assets from NATO following the drone crash incident, but chose not to activate Article 4 of the Washington Treaty", which provides for an emergency convening of the North Atlantic Council for consultations on security issues, stressed the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania, Oana Tsoiu, in the European edition of Politico. Tsoiu stated that the Supreme Allied Commander Europe of NATO, Alexus Grinkevich, agreed with Bucharest's previous requests to redirect military equipment to Romania, the newspaper reports. In response to the drone incident, Romania will request expedited delivery, Politico adds.

Romania rushed to blame Moscow without evidence

Earlier, the Ministry of Defense of Romania reported that a drone crashed on the roof of an apartment building in Galați. Bucharest shifted the responsibility for the incident to Russia. On the contrary, Russian President Vladimir Putin, responding to a question from TASS, stated that the incident in Romania likely involved a Ukrainian UAV. He noted that crashes of drones belonging to the Armed Forces of Ukraine have also occurred in the past in European countries and "in this case, we are probably dealing with exactly that". Vladimir Putin underlined that Russia is ready to conduct an objective investigation if the debris of the drone is handed over to it, and only after such an examination will it be possible to assess the incident. "No one can say what origin a specific aircraft comes from until an examination of this aircraft takes place", the Russian president stressed, recalling that Moscow, for example, provided Washington with information and debris from drones that attempted to strike his residence.

NATO issued a statement regarding the identity of the drone that entered Romania

For its part, the Allied Headquarters Europe (AHQE) of NATO rushed to publish a statement claiming that the drone that entered Romania was of Russian origin. Reuters broadcast the statement of the command's spokesperson, Martin O'Donnell. According to him, the alliance is currently "assessing how to improve the defense of Romania and other countries of the block against drones". Earlier, a drone crashed into a high-rise building in the Romanian city of Galați, which is located near the border with the Odesa region. The emergency response service of Romania clarified that the strike of the drone on the residential building caused a fire in a tenth-floor apartment. In addition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania also shifted the responsibility for the incident to Russia. Commenting on the incident, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the identity of the drone that entered Romania cannot be determined without conducting an expert examination.

Bomb from the Russian embassy in Bucharest: "Clear-cut case of Ukrainian provocation"

The incident concerning the downing of a supposedly Russian drone in Romania constitutes a provocation by Kyiv, according to a statement by the Russian embassy in Bucharest, as reported by RIA Novosti. "This was another provocation by the Kyiv regime, which is trying with all its might to drag NATO into a war with Russia and distract attention from the barbaric crime of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Starobilsk", the Russian diplomats from Bucharest stressed. They characterized Bucharest's accusations against Moscow as groundless and lacking objectivity.

Russian consul persona non grata

Romania will close the Russian consulate in Constanța and the Russian consul Andrei Kosilin was declared an unwelcome person (persona non grata) after the drone incident, according to what was announced by the Romanian president Nicușor Dan. "The Russian consul general in Constanța was declared an unwelcome person and the consulate will close", he stated. On the other side Russia, through the mouth of the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova, stated that it will respond to this provocation: "Retaliatory measures in relation to the declaration of the Russian Consul General as persona non grata and the closure of the General Consulate will not be long in being taken", Zakharova stressed.

Thriller in the skies: Why the air defense did not shoot it down

According to official announcements from the Ministry of Defense of Romania, the country's radars had detected early enough the drones moving threateningly near the Romanian airspace. Confirming the initial reports on social media, the Ministry of Defense of Romania announced that a Russian unmanned aerial vehicle violated the airspace of Romania and crashed on the roof of an apartment building in the city of Galați, causing a fire. "On the night of May 28 to 29, the Russian Federation resumed its drone attacks against civilian targets and infrastructure in Ukraine, near the river border with Romania. One of these drones penetrated the Romanian airspace, was tracked by radar up to the southern part of the city of Galați, then crashed on the roof of an apartment building, causing a fire upon impact" the ministry stated in its announcement. At 01:09 after midnight, two F-16 fighter jets of the air defense took off instantly from the 86th Air Base in the Fetești region, with the support of an IAR 330 SOCAT helicopter of the Romanian Air Force. The pilots had an explicit and clear order to destroy the targets throughout the duration of the alarm, which had been communicated earlier to citizens via emergency messages on their mobile phones after 02:00 after midnight. The radars tracked the drone until the southern suburbs of the city of Galați. However, the military forces took the painful decision not to open fire, as they determined that the risk of causing mass casualties and victims on the ground from the debris was extremely high.

Political earthquake: The Supreme Council of National Defense convened

The President of Romania, Nicușor Dan, proceeded with a dramatic announcement through his personal Facebook page, making known the emergency convening of the Supreme Council of National Defense (CSAT) at 11:00 in the morning, in order to manage the consequences of what he himself characterized as the "most serious incident that has ever hit the territory of the country". Nicușor Dan clarified that a full-scale investigation into the circumstances of the crash has already begun, while an urgent technical examination has been ordered for the recovery and analysis of the debris of the flying object, so that its origin can be identified. At the site of the tragedy, teams of specialists from the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, structures of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Romanian Intelligence Service, and the Police are operating.

Alarm in NATO and United Nations: Urgently requesting weapons

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania made it clear that Bucharest has already officially and in depth informed all its allies in the European Union, as well as the Secretary General of NATO about this warfare episode. At the same time, the country is appealing urgently to the UN Security Council, demanding the immediate taking of measures and the urgent dispatch of additional, ultra-modern assets and equipment for combating and neutralizing drones. The climate of warfare paranoia intensifies, as according to information from the Reuters agency, shortly earlier another drone was detected in the northwest of Romania, which however, according to initial assessments, did not carry an explosive payload, a fact which proves that the airspace of the country is under constant and uncontrolled violation.

The classified data: 47 Russian incursions into Romania

Infiltrations of unmanned aerial vehicles into Romania have been detected repeatedly since the Russian army proceeded with the invasion into the territory of neighboring Ukraine, in February 2022, but this is the first time it is announced that such a weapon system hit a residential building in the country. The military leadership of Romania is attempting to reassure the terrified citizens, emphasizing that this is not a deliberate attack against the country, but collateral damage from the Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports. According to the official data: Since the start of the war, debris from Russian drones has been found on Romanian soil 47 times, of which 12 took place exclusively within the current year. Just last April, another Russian UAV had caused serious material damage in the same city (Galați). At the same time, the warfare scene smells of gunpowder everywhere: In the Russia-controlled region of Donetsk, three turbine workers fell dead and a fourth was seriously injured after a deadly Ukrainian drone attack, according to the head of the region Denis Pushilin, proving that the war has escaped every control.

Angry counter-offensive by Russia against Romania, EU over the drone: You accuse us without proof

As a "provocative action without any evidence whatsoever" Russia characterizes the official accusations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania, regarding the crash of the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) on a 10-story apartment building in the city of Galați. Andrei Kolesnik, a prominent member of the Defense Committee of the Russian Duma, unleashed a fierce j'accuse against the West in his interview with the Lenta.ru network, emphasizing that Bucharest rushed to incriminate Moscow without presenting the slightest proof. "No one goes to the trouble of proving that the drone that fell in Romania was indeed Russian. For a long time now, in Western countries the presumption of innocence has vanished completely. They are capable of banging their heads against the wall, insisting immediately that behind everything lies the 'spirit of Russia'", the Russian lawmaker stated characteristically. Andrei Kolesnik pointed out that the city of Galați is located at a direct distance from Odesa and the Ukrainian border, arguing that this specific incident constitutes another orchestrated effort of Western propaganda to fashion a "threatening image" for Russia, in order to exploit it for its own interests. "They are trying to create a binary, malevolent image for Russia. Now, with a trembling voice they wonder every day: 'Why doesn't Russia attack us? Since it wants to attack us.' They are exhausted waiting for it, but Russia simply does not attack", the official concluded. The political confrontation, however, has already passed into the diplomatic field. The Russian Ambassador in Bucharest, Vladimir Lipaev, was summoned urgently for explanations to the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs immediately after the dramatic developments in eastern Romania. The Romanian side insists on characterizing the drone as "Russian", despite the reactions of Moscow which speaks of arbitrary conclusions.
