Europe has been put on high alert following an unprecedented war-like scenario of terror that unfolded on the night of May 29 in Romania, awakening memories of total war. An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), of currently unknown origin, invaded the country's national airspace and struck with terrifying force onto the roof of a 10-story apartment building in the city of Galați, which is located a stone's throw from the border with the Odesa region. The impact was so violent that it was followed by a powerful explosion, which shook the entire area and immediately caused a large fire in a 10th-floor apartment. About 70 residents were hastily evacuated from the burning building in a state of absolute panic, while a woman and her minor child were injured by the explosion and fire, suffering minor burns and being rushed to the hospital. Thriller in the skies: Why the air defense did not shoot it down
According to official announcements by the Ministry of Defense of Romania, the country's radar systems had detected the drones moving threateningly near the Romanian airspace in time. At 01:09 in the morning, two F-16 fighter jets of the air defense took off at lightning speed from the 86th Air Base in the Fetești region, supported by an IAR 330 SOCAT helicopter of the Romanian Air Force. The pilots had an express and clear order to destroy the targets throughout the duration of the alarm, which had been communicated to citizens earlier through emergency messages on their mobile phones after 02:00. The radars tracked the drone until it reached the southern suburbs of Galați. However, the military forces made the painful decision not to open fire, as they determined that the risk of causing mass casualties and victims on the ground from the debris was extremely high.
Political earthquake: The Supreme Council of National Defense is convened
The President of Romania, Nikushor Dan, made a dramatic announcement via his personal Facebook page, announcing the emergency convening of the Supreme Council of National Defense (SECF) at 11:00 a.m. to manage the consequences of what he described as the "most serious incident to have ever struck the country's territory." Nikushor Dan clarified that a full-scale investigation into the conditions of the crash has already begun, while an urgent technical examination has been ordered to recover and analyze the debris of the flying object in order to identify its origin. Expert teams from the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, structures of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Romanian Intelligence Service, and the Police are operating at the site of the tragedy.
Alarm at NATO and the United Nations: Urgent requests for weapons
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania clarified that Bucharest has already officially and thoroughly informed all its allies in the European Union, as well as the Secretary General of NATO, about this war incident. At the same time, the country is making an emergency appeal to the UN Security Council, demanding immediate action and the urgent dispatch of additional, ultra-modern means and equipment for the combat and neutralization of drones. The climate of war paranoia is intensifying, as according to information from the Reuters agency, another drone was detected a little earlier in northwestern Romania, which, however, according to initial estimates, did not carry an explosive payload, proving that the country's airspace is under constant and unchecked violation.
