Tsunami in Japan – Shock warning following 7.4 magnitude earthquake – Evacuations underway
Japan reported that tsunami waves are already approaching coastal areas.

A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck northern Japan on Monday (20/4/2026), according to national broadcaster NHK, triggering tsunami warnings across coastal regions. Minutes later, two tsunamis measuring 70 and 80 centimeters were recorded. Specifically, the second tsunami was detected at Kuji Port in Iwate Prefecture, two minutes after the first 70-centimeter wave and 41 minutes after the initial tremor.

Warning for tsunami up to 3 meters

Authorities have warned that waves as high as 3 meters could reach areas of Iwate Prefecture and Hokkaido, urging residents to move to higher ground. Emergency services are on high alert as officials assess potential damages and monitor the evolving situation.

In its announcement, Japan stated that tsunami waves are already approaching coastal areas and could strike repeatedly, emphasizing that people must evacuate without delay and remain in safe locations until all warnings are lifted. It also warned that waves could arrive earlier or later than predicted and may be higher than expected, while advising those in affected areas to stay away from coasts and river mouths that could overflow.

Reports of damage

Japan's Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, told reporters that "human and material damage" has been reported across the country following the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck Japan, triggering a tsunami. "For now, we have received a report that human and material damage is being confirmed, but from now on, we will receive detailed reports and deal with the disaster response," she stated. A special task force has been established to handle the emergency. Meanwhile, the operator of the Fukushima Daiichi plant confirmed that the facility, which was the site of a nuclear meltdown after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, is operating normally.
