In a move that highlights the immediate danger of the conflict spreading into the heart of the European Union, a war council is being convened in Cyprus on Monday 9/3.
As announced by the French Presidency, the president of France, Emmanuel Macron, is urgently traveling to Cyprus on Monday.
According to France24, the visit constitutes an act of “war solidarity” toward the member state that received last week the nightmarish attack by drones and missiles within the framework of the escalation in the Middle East.
The Elysee made it clear that the situation in the region no longer allows any delay.
Trilateral meeting in the electric chair of the Mediterranean
In Paphos, Emmanuel Macron will meet with the president of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, and the Greek prime minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
This meeting is not a simple diplomatic contact but an emergency security council aimed at fortifying Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean.
The French Presidency indirectly admits that the security of European partners hangs by a thread, seeking ways to prevent a total destabilization that would drag the entire continent.

The desperate effort for de escalation
Paris is attempting to send a message of strength at a moment when the Eastern Mediterranean smells of gunpowder.
Strengthening security around Cyprus is now considered an issue of vital importance for the survival of European cohesion.
However, the presence of Emmanuel Macron at the center of the conflict proves that the fear of a generalized confrontation has already reached the door of Europe, turning Cyprus into the front line of a global geopolitical storm.
European force forming a shield around Cyprus
It is recalled that after the escalation of the conflict between the United States and Israel and Iran, which began in late February 2026, and the subsequent drone attack on the United Kingdom base at Akrotiri on 1 March, the European military presence around Cyprus has increased dramatically.
At this moment (8 March 2026), the force that has been deployed is:
1) Greece
Greece led the European assistance and has already sent significant forces for the defense of the island:
Navy: Two frigates, referred to as Kimon and Psara, equipped with anti drone systems.
Air force: Four F-16 fighter aircraft have been redeployed to Cyprus to strengthen air defense.
2) France
France immediately followed Greece in the European mobilization.
Aircraft carrier: The Charles de Gaulle and its strike group have been ordered to sail to the Eastern Mediterranean.
Navy: The frigate Languedoc is already in the area, while additional units are expected.
Air defense: Macron announced the dispatch of additional air defense units to the island.
3) Other European forces (Protection Alliance)
Four more countries announced on 5 March the deployment of naval assets:
Italy: Sends naval units, possibly the frigate Spartaco Schergat, and air defense systems.
Spain: Sends the frigate Cristóbal Colón, the most advanced of its fleet.
Netherlands: Sends the frigate Evertsen, specialized in intercepting missiles and drones.
Germany: The frigate FGS Nordrhein-Westfalen has arrived in Limassol.
United Kingdom: Despite the attack it received, it is reinforcing the Bases with the air defense destroyer HMS Dragon and helicopters.
Permanent deployment of F-16 from Turkey in Cyprus
According to reports in the Turkish press, including Türkiye and Milliyet, Ankara is seriously considering the possibility of permanently deploying F-16 fighter aircraft in the occupied territories as a direct response to the recent moves of Greece in Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean.
Citing sources from the Turkish Ministry of Defence, the newspapers report that the plan foresees in the first phase the dispatch of four aircraft to the illegal airport of Tymbou.
This move is presented as a necessary step for the “security” of the Turkish Cypriots, while it is directly linked with the increased military activity in the region and the escalation of tensions in the Middle East between Israel and Iran.
Reactions over the British bases
The recent drone attack on the base at Akrotiri has triggered strong reactions in Cyprus against the British military presence, according to an extensive report by the United Kingdom newspaper The Guardian.
The incident strengthened fears of the island’s direct involvement in the Middle East crisis, with hundreds of demonstrators marching toward the Presidential Palace in Nicosia demanding the removal of the bases and shouting slogans such as “Cyprus is not a launch platform”.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Konstantinos Kombos, confirmed that the unmanned aircraft was Iranian made and was launched from Lebanon, confirming concerns that the military installations on the island have now become targets in a wider regional conflict.
The seriousness of the situation is highlighted by the detection and interception of two more drones off Cyprus a few hours later, with many officials describing the present crisis as the greatest security challenge for the country since 1974.
