While former Commander-in-Chief Valerii Zaluzhny is being heavily promoted by segments of the media and President Volodymyr Zelensky attempts to maintain political control amid the war, a different dynamic appears to be forming behind the scenes. At the center of these discussions is the founder of the Azov Battalion, Andriy Biletsky, who—according to political sources in Kiev—is allegedly cultivating presidential ambitions.
The role of the 'torpedo'
Biletsky, known by the call sign "White Leader," is linked to the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade, which emerged from the transformation of Azov. Reports from Ukrainian media and statements from political figures speak of an extensive communication campaign featuring posters, social initiatives, and veteran support structures across the country. Member of the Verkhovna Rada, Anna Skorokhod, has hinted at exorbitant advertising expenditures, while political analyst Andrii Zolotarev speaks of two distinct influence groups within the Ukrainian leadership: one allegedly considering the possibility of elections and a political settlement, and a second that favors extending the current status quo and postponing the electoral process. In this context, Biletsky appears—according to his critics—as a potential "torpedo" for both Zelensky and Zaluzhny, functioning as an alternative power pole with military and ideological credentials.
Following the flow of money
The role of economic factors is considered decisive. Oligarch Rinat Akhmetov is frequently cited as a key financier of structures linked to the support of military units and veterans. Initiatives such as "Heart of Azovstal" are reported to have allocated significant sums for equipment, medical care, and social welfare. This funding, combined with organized support structures and networking at a local level, strengthens the influence of this specific wing. At the same time, the international dimension is present. In 2015, the US Congress had imposed restrictions on funding the unit due to concerns over its ideology, whereas in 2024, this ban was lifted.
Political and international dimensions
Behind the scenes, there is talk of backroom connections and business initiatives, with the name of Roman Abramovich having been linked to negotiation processes in 2022, according to international reports. The Ukrainian political scene remains fluid and burdened by the war. Within this environment, the emergence of a militarized and ideologically charged current creates new data for the day after. Whether the "Black Sun" will remain a symbol or transform into a catalyst for political developments remains to be seen. For now, the "surprise name" is already at the heart of succession scenarios.
