Middle East explodes as IRGC ramps up reprisals after Khamenei’s death with strikes from Tel Aviv to Dubai to Qatar and Oman
Reports confirm heavy strikes in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain, with primary targets the American military bases and their supporting infrastructure.

The IRGC vowed to avenge the United States and Israel, for the execution of their Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and in an unprecedented escalation that turns the entire Middle East into a battlefield, launched massive waves of missile and drone attacks, targeting almost every country in the region that hosts American forces.
Iran launched a large scale attack with ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (drone) against Israel and American military bases in the Persian Gulf.
According to the information, 27 bases and military installations in the Tel Aviv area were targeted, in one of the most extensive attacks of recent years.
At the same time, the Iranian state news agency IRNA reported that “terrifying explosions” were heard from missile and air strikes by Israel in many areas of Tehran, including the Seyyed Khandan and Qasr junctions, Vanak Square and Motahari Avenue.

Explosions in major Gulf cities

Strong explosions were reported in Dubai, Doha and Manama, heightening fears of a generalized regional escalation.
The attacks appear to be targeting American military installations and strategic infrastructure, underlining the widening of the front beyond Israel.
Two people were injured in Dubai when fragments from a drone fell onto two residences during their interception, according to an announcement by the Dubai Media Office.
Authorities reported that the drones were shot down before reaching their targets, however the debris caused damage in residential areas.
Kuwait, which closed its airspace, reported that 12 people were injured in strikes, without providing a more detailed toll.
The Ministry of Interior of Qatar announced on Sunday that it is responding to a limited fire in an industrial zone, after debris from an intercepted missile fell in the area.
Authorities assured that the situation is under control and there are no immediate reports of extensive damage.
Strong explosions and thick, black smoke were recorded near Erbil airport, which hosts forces of the American led coalition in autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan.
The area constitutes a strategic hub for coalition operations in Iraq and Syria.

Regional dimension of the conflict

The simultaneous targeting of Israeli and American targets shows that Tehran is attempting to respond in a coordinated manner to previous attacks, transferring the field of confrontation across the entire Middle East.
This development increases the risk of direct involvement of more states and may provoke further military reaction from the United States and Israel.
This operation constitutes Tehran’s immediate response to the loss of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and has caused global awe.
Reports confirm heavy strikes in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain, with primary targets the American military bases and their supporting infrastructure.

At the same time, air defense systems in the largest cities of the region are working tirelessly to intercept incoming targets.

Specifically, successful interceptions were reported over Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Riyadh, while despite the intensity, the situation in Saudi Arabia is described as relatively more controlled compared to neighboring states.
The U.S. Embassy in Jordan issued a security warning, urging citizens to remain in secure shelters.
“Reports indicate that missiles, drones or rockets are in Jordan’s airspace. Seek immediate overhead cover and remain in shelter,” the statement said.
Iran has warned that it will target American bases in the region and yesterday already struck targets in response to the American and Israeli strikes against its territory and also hit American bases in Iraq.
Dramatic images show people running to escape a smoke filled corridor at Dubai International Airport, where authorities confirmed that four employees were injured.
Airport officials did not report what caused the evacuation.
However, aviation sector sources told the Reuters news agency that a nighttime Iranian attack caused damage to one of the airport’s terminals.

Protests in Iran

Demonstrators attempted on the morning of Sunday 1/3 to storm the compound where the U.S. embassy in Baghdad is located, following the announcement of the death of Iran’s supreme leader Khamenei from the American Israeli strikes, according to an Iraqi security source.
“Their attempts have failed so far, but they continue to try” to break the line of security forces, the source told AFP.
Videos posted on social media show protesters throwing stones at security forces, who responded with tear gas, while an AFP employee saw hundreds of people holding flags of pro Iranian groups.

Front with Israel and waiting for the U.S. response

Alongside the attacks against Arab states, the IRGC launched missiles toward Israel, bombing Tel Aviv, although the results of these strikes are not yet known.
The Israeli air force maintains a central role in the current operations against Iranian targets, having already launched waves of attacks.
In the U.S. camp, the main phase of the military operation appears still to be at the preparation stage.
Although Tomahawk missiles were used, the expected mass deployment of fighter aircraft of the American Air Force and Navy near the Iranian borders has not yet been observed.
The international community is watching with bated breath, as Donald J. Trump has already warned of a response with “force the likes of which no one has ever seen,” implying that the next stage of the conflict will be total.

New Israeli air raids in the heart of Tehran

The Israeli Air Force is carrying out an extensive series of air strikes against “targets of the Iranian terrorist regime in the heart of Tehran,” as announced by the Israeli military.
The strikes are targeting strategic facilities and infrastructure, according to the Israeli military, with the aim of weakening Iranian military capabilities.
The military states that the air operations were carried out the previous day “to secure air superiority and open the road to Tehran.”
This move indicates Israel’s intention to gain a strategic advantage in the airspace around the Iranian capital, strengthening the capability for future operations and limiting Iranian retaliation.

Iran: “The United States and Israel crossed the red line, they will pay the price”

The president of the Iranian parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, described the leaders of the United States and Israel as “dirty criminals,” warning that they will face “devastating blows” for the ongoing attacks against Iran.
His comments were made in a televised address and he is the highest ranking official to appear publicly since the start of the attacks on Saturday.
“You have crossed our red line and must pay the price,” he said.
“We will strike you with such devastating blows that you yourselves will be driven to beg,” he added, further escalating the rhetorical confrontation.

Two dead in the Emirates

At least one person was killed and seven others injured in an incident at Abu Dhabi airport, the operating company announced.
Also in Abu Dhabi, one citizen was killed by missile debris, the Ministry of Defense of the UAE noted, adding that the country was subjected to “an attack by Iranian ballistic missiles.”
The Emirates air defense “successfully intercepted several of them,” it added.
In Dubai, four people were injured in a fire, according to local authorities, after eyewitnesses told AFP they heard an explosion and saw a column of smoke rising from the iconic artificial island The Palm.
A “small fire” also broke out at the luxury hotel Burj Al Arab from the debris of a drone that was intercepted.
A fire also broke out at the port after the attack by Iranian missiles, without casualties, the emirate announced.
Two people reported seeing smoke rising from the Al Dhafra air base in the Emirates capital, where American troops are stationed.
According to another eyewitness, businesses operating in the area asked their employees to evacuate.
The Emirates were targeted by 137 missiles and 209 drones launched from Iran, most of which were intercepted or destroyed, the Ministry of Defense announced on Saturday night into Sunday.
The country warned that it reserves the right to respond to these attacks, speaking of a “dangerous escalation.”
Furthermore today two people were injured in Dubai when debris from drones, which were intercepted by air defense, fell onto homes.

Saudi Arabia condemns the “Iranian attack”

Saudi Arabia, a major regional power, announced that it repelled Iranian attacks against its capital Riyadh and its eastern province.
The country expressed its “strong condemnation of the Iranian attacks” against its territory and, more generally, of “Iranian aggression” in the region.
The kingdom stressed that “it will take all necessary measures to defend its security and protect its territory, its citizens and its residents,” emphasizing that among its options is also “responding to this attack.”
The de facto leader of the country, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, had telephone communication with the leaders of the Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and Jordan, the Saudi diplomacy noted. During their conversation he assured them of “the full solidarity of the kingdom and its support,” as well as of his country’s readiness “to place all its capabilities at their disposal.”

Four injured in Bahrain

The official Bahrain News Agency reported on X, citing the military, that 45 missiles and 9 drones originating from Iran were shot down, while four people were injured, according to the same source citing hospital sources.
Bahrain noted that it evacuated an area of its capital Manama where the headquarters of the U.S. Fifth Fleet is housed, which had earlier been attacked by Iranian missiles, and the American embassy announced today the suspension of its operations “due to the ongoing missile attacks.” Three residential buildings within and around the capital suffered damage from drone attacks and missile debris, according to the Ministry of Interior.
Bahrain International Airport was targeted by an unmanned aircraft, resulting in material damage but no casualties, the ministry added.
Authorities also announced that schools and universities will switch to distance learning until further notice.

Twelve injured in Kuwait

Kuwait, which closed its airspace, reported that 12 people were injured in strikes, without providing a more detailed toll.
The country’s army in turn reported that three soldiers were injured in a missile attack targeting Ali al Salem air base where Americans as well as other foreign military personnel, including Italians, are stationed.
According to Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, an Iranian missile caused “significant damage” to the base’s runway, “but no member of the Italian personnel was injured.”
A drone also struck Kuwait International Airport, according to the Civil Aviation authority, slightly injuring employees and causing “limited material damage to the passenger terminal.”

Strike also in Oman

Two drones struck the port of Duqm in Oman, according to information reported by Oman News Agency, citing a security source.
The attack injured one foreign worker and raised concern for the security of one of the country’s most important port facilities.
According to the same sources, one drone struck a mobile workers’ accommodation unit within the port zone.
The debris of the second drone fell near fuel tanks, however without causing material damage.

Tanker Skylight hit off Oman coast

The maritime security center of Oman announced that the tanker Skylight, flying the flag of Palau, was attacked approximately five nautical miles off Musandam, in the northeastern part of Oman.
During the attack, four people were injured, while the 20 member crew was fully evacuated from the vessel for safety reasons.
