Rapid developments are expected today from the United States regarding the course of the war in Ukraine, as talks between the Presidents of the United States and Ukraine, Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky, will take place in Florida at 20:00 Greek time.
The main topic of the discussion is, according to what the illegal Ukrainian president has stated, 10% of the points of the peace plan for resolving the conflict, which include the thorny issue of territories, as well as control of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
Despite the constant bravado in which Zelensky engages, insisting that not a single inch of territory be conceded, the reality is different.
As revealed by the Ukrainian website Strana.ua, Zelensky may proceed with greater concessions in the process of resolving the conflict than he has publicly stated, particularly on the issue of territories, which he previously described as the most difficult point of the peace plan:
“However, no one from Washington has officially confirmed that they agree ‘90%’ with the 20 points described by Zelensky. Only Zelensky himself has stated this, as have media outlets close to the Democratic Party and the hardline wing of the Republican Party,” the website reports.
Nothing has been agreed
The publication highlights a statement by Trump who made it clear that he does not approve the 20 point plan previously presented by Zelensky.
In a comment to Politico, the head of the White House noted that “Zelensky has nothing” until it is approved by him. He added, however, that today’s meeting could be productive.
“After Trump’s statement, it emerges that the 20 point plan is not a document agreed with Washington, but Kyiv’s perspective on the parameters of a peace agreement, which the Americans conveyed to the Russians and, as both sides have confirmed, have already received a response from the Kremlin,” Strana.ua notes.
The publication clarifies that, according to comments from the Russian side, Moscow’s response was negative. However, Russia did not comment directly on the document referred to by the Ukrainian President.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia merely stated that there had been progress in the negotiations.
Following the presentation of the 20 point plan by Zelensky, Trump scheduled a meeting with the Ukrainian President in Florida and also announced talks with Vladimir Putin.
“In this context, the theory has already developed that Zelensky has in fact agreed to make much greater concessions than he has publicly stated,” Strana.ua clarifies.
What is known about the negotiations
The talks will take place today in Palm Beach, Florida, with a start time of 20:00 Greek time.
Zelensky arrived in the United States yesterday and a meeting with European leaders preceded it. The Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk, stated that security guarantees for Ukraine were the main issue and that the discussion would continue after the meeting with Trump.
The Ukrainian President had stated that the meeting with Trump was necessary in order to agree on the remaining 10% of the peace plan, while 90% had already been agreed at the level of delegations.
“With regard to sensitive issues, we will discuss both the Donbass and the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant,” Zelensky clarified.
According to the Wall Street Journal, one of the central points remains the security guarantees that Washington will provide to Kyiv:
“One of the main objectives for Ukraine and its European allies is to convince Trump that the real obstacle to peace is Vladimir Putin, not Zelensky,” the publication adds.
The American website Axios reported that the meeting shows progress in the peace talks, as Trump had stated that he would meet Zelensky only if he believed that the agreement was close to completion.
However, the German newspaper Bild, citing experts, warns that the negotiations may not be successful:
“For Trump, Ukraine is an annoying obstacle to the normalization of relations with Russia, which is his main geopolitical goal,” security expert Peter Neumann told Bild.
